June Canedo de Souza
Biography
June Canedo de Souza is a Brazilian-American artist currently based in New York. She works in painting, sculpture, performance, photography, and video. Her practice engages in a conceptual exploration of memory as it relates to migration, which she approaches with a perspective shaped by her upbringing in a working-class family of undocumented domestic and construction workers. She earned her MFA from the Milton Avery School of the Arts at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, and is an alumni of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Madison, ME. Recent projects and exhibitions include the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, Los Angeles, CA; the Kitchen OnScreen, New York, NY; and MIMO Gallery, New York, NY. Her books have been acquired by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; New York University, New York, NY; Harvard University, Cambridge, MA; the Getty Research Institute, and more. She was a finalist for the Foundwork Artist Prize (2022) and is a 2024–25 session artist at Recess, Brooklyn, NY.
