Visiting Artist Teaching Fellowship

We are pleased  to announce a semester-long residential teaching fellowship for practicing visual artists in Washington, DC.

American University and Hamiltonian Artists invite applications for the newly established Visiting Artist Teaching Fellowship for the Spring 2027 semester (from January to May 2027). This fellowship is for practicing visual artists who are committed to artist mentorship and studio-driven pedagogy. It offers fully funded housing, studio space, and a paid graduate-level teaching appointment in the MFA Studio Art Program at American University. 

The MFA course will provide students with personalized studio guidance, critiques, and discussions with practicing artists allowing for extensive engagement with professionals in the field who can act as mentors. The fellow will also participate in end-of-semester graduate critique reviews. 

The fellow will be invited to engage directly with the Hamiltonian Fellows by participating in scheduled professional development and fellowship programming. Additionally, the fellow will host a public program, such as an open studio event, at Hamiltonian Artists to share their work and creative process with the broader DC community.

The Fellowship offers comprehensive support: $5,900 teaching salary for a graduate course, $2,000 residency honorarium, $1,000 stipend for a public lecture and travel expenses. Fully funded housing and studio provided by Hamiltonian Artists in Washington, DC. 

The priority deadline for applications is September 15, 2026, at 5:00 PM ET.

1. Statement of Interest:
   • Detail your interest in the fellowship, your approach to artist mentorship and studio-driven pedagogy, and how a semester in Washington, DC, aligns with your creative practice. Highlight experience with mentorship regarding studio guidance and critique.
2. Curriculum Vitae (CV) (PDF)
   • Complete CV highlighting exhibition history, teaching experience, awards, residencies, and relevant professional activities.
3. Artist Portfolio (20 Images) 
   • Include 20 high-resolution images of work with corresponding image details: title, year, medium, dimensions, and brief contextual notes where appropriate.

Eligibility Requirements

Degree: An MFA, or anticipated MFA completion by January 15, 2027, in Visual Arts, Studio Art, or a related creative discipline is required.

Teaching Experience: Prior teaching experience at the university level is not required. Practicing artists with a strong desire to mentor graduate students are highly encouraged to apply.

Residency: Housing arrangements are provided at no cost. The selected fellow must reside in Washington, DC, for the duration of the Spring semester (January – May 2027) to fulfill on-campus teaching and on-site studio requirements.
