Genie Ghim
Through her work, Genie invites the viewer to question preconceived ideas by challenging internal skepticism. As an interdisciplinary artist and expatriate from Washington, D.C. (b. Seoul, Korea) her practice explores the dynamic interplay between tradition and innovation, reflecting on collective preconceptions and the formation of identity. This research has been shaped by
her experiences of navigating multicultural social landscapes, she has lived in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Often working in series as stories of recognition, authority and migration continue to evolve. Her work of cross-cultural exchange and assimilation employs a diverse range of materials and mediums. Characterized by vivid color palettes and hard-edged abstraction, her visual language merges popular culture with historical and personal narratives.
Genie attended the Corcoran School of Art and the Fashion Institute of Technology. She holds an MFA from American University where she received the Ruth Meixner-Bird Scholarship, the Robyn Rafferty Mathias Research Grants, and the Stanley G. Wolpoff Award for works on paper. She is a recipient of the Artists & Scholars Project Grant from the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County (AHCMC) FY25. Recently, Genie completed an artist residency at JOYA: arte + ecología in the Almeria region of Andalucía, Spain, further expanding her engagement with intercultural themes and conceptual inquiry.
Genie currently divides her time between Washington, D.C. and Madrid, Spain.
