Worlds in the Making with District Collage

Saturday, November 21, 1–3pm

RSVP

Join District Collage for a hands-on workshop, using collage to imagine the futures we want for ourselves and our communities.

We are living in someone else’s imagination. The structures that surround us, the systems that govern were built largely without our input. But what if our future stemmed from our own imagination? Join District Collage co-founders Anjelika Deogirikar Grossman and hasini shyamsundar at Hamiltonian Artists for a workshop that invites participants to explore: How might we imagine the future wewant for ourselves and our communities?

All supplies provided. Open to all-ages and skill levels. Artists under 16 are asked to be accompanied by an adult.

This program was selected from Hamiltonian Artists open call, which invites artists, organizers, and cultural workers to present professional presentations in our U Street gallery space.

About District Collage

Cofounded by D.C.-based artists and educators Anjelika Deogirikar Grossman and hasini shyamsundar, District Collage is a creative community of practice for collage-making. They met in D.C. while working in higher education and bonded over their shared upbringing in the San Francisco Bay Area. Shaped by D.C.’s arts and culture scene, Anjelika and hasini cultivated their own creative practices and sought to build space for others to do the same.

As educators and creatives, they embrace a beginner’s mindset—the idea that the less one knows, the more one grows. Anjelika holds an M.A. in Engaged and Public Humanities, and hasini holds an M.A. in Learning, Design, and Technology. Through their own learning journeys, they have often encountered more questions about the world than answers. Their creative practices have afforded them a sense of agency in an ever-shifting world.

District Collage is their love letter to Washington, D.C. Recognizing the city’s flourishing arts and culture ecosystem, they are building District Collage as a space where people can find their own little home within it.

Anjelika and hasini envision a world where anyone can tap into their creativity and feel secure in their identity as an artist. They believe creativity should be a valued asset—a force that can bring people together and counter a culture of isolation. Through District Collage, they are planting a seed for this future and inviting others to nurture it with them.
