HAMILTONIAN NEWS UPDATE (August
14, 2008)
Dear Friends,
As the summer weeks go by we are getting closer and closer to the opening
of the Hamiltonian Gallery! Construction
has delayed us a bit, but we are so excited about our first exhibition in
September. The show will feature the work of mentor-artist Nao Matsumoto, and Hamiltonian Fellows Bryan Rojsuontikul
and Ian
MacLean Davis.
We would like to congratulate Alex Gutierrez on his new full-time
teaching position in Chicago.
This is a wonderful career opportunity for Alex and we all wish him well
in his new and exciting venture in the coming year. During his
leave of absence, we would like to welcome the addition of Michael Iacovone
to the So-Hamiltonian Fellowship Program,
who was selected by our External Review Panel at the beginning of the
year. Michael, a photographer, has a stunning solo exhibition
currently on view at Flashpoint Gallery. Welcome Michael!
During the summer, Hamiltonian Artists partnered with ARCH/Honfleur
Gallery
in helping to expand an exciting
Washington, DC-based Artist in Residence program. The partnership
aims to support local and out-of-state artists through affordable artist
housing, which will also help improve the Southeast neighborhood of
Anacostia through Arts Revitalization. Drew Gonce
is our first Hamiltonian Intern and Artist in Residence in this
collaborative program. Welcome Drew!
Drew also has his work on view right now
at the 2nd Annual East of the River Exhibition at the Honfleur
Gallery. This group show has just opened last Saturday.
Please visit Honfleur Gallery on the East side
of the River.
Hamiltonian Artists has also become a partner organization with
Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts. For the coming year, WALA
will provide all 10 fellows with WALA membership, which includes free
legal clinic sessions and free admission to educational programs.
We think this arrangement will be a great resource for our Fellows.
Dale Ihnken, the Executive Director of Hamiltonian Artists was the juror
for a new Artist Residency program at the Torpedo Factory's Target Gallery
that just opened last Thursday. Julie Camarata
from Knoxville, TN was the first recipient of this two-week. Her installation, titled
"Slick," uses petroleum-based products to make politically
charged installations focused on the oil industry. This powerful
work touches on a subject that is purely unavoidable in this day and age.
A big "thank you" goes out to Project 4 Gallery, Millennium Arts Salon and Smith Farm Healing Arts Center
for graciously allowing Hamiltonian Artists to borrow their spaces for
our Speaker Series. We would not have been able to commence our
Fellowship Program without their support. Thanks!
Lastly, look out for Hamiltonian Gallery on either Tuesday, August 12th
or August 19th on local news channel NBC4, at 5pm. Our green-roof
will be featured on the segment "Going Green."
I hope everyone is well and enjoying the rest of their summer!
All the best,
Jacqueline Ionita
